Magnesium alloy – new bicycle wheels reality

Our first post will be of magnesium alloy wheels. In recent years, magnesium alloy has attracted wide attention from all over the world, as the most promising lightweight material for key researchers, and developed a series of technology to promote the magnesium alloy in the transport, aerospace and defense industry applications. Despite this, many people are still not aware or are confused about bicycle wheels that are made of magnesium wants to conduct an educational program and to give answers on all of the existing questions about magnesium alloy and wheels.

So let’s think what magnesium alloy is and why that material is excellent for bicycle wheels?

Magnesium is one of the metals, industrial use, and production of which began to develop about a hundred years ago. Pure magnesium metal is used primarily as an alloying element in alloys of aluminum, titanium and some other metals because pure magnesium cannot deal with corrosion. Due to the high electric potential, these alloys are used as protectors for electrochemical protection of magnesium structures from corrosion in seawater and underground structures. Magnesium alloy is magnesium mixed with other metals like aluminum and zinc, which makes it corrosion resistant alloy.

To find out about the components of magnesium alloy you can use ASTM specification B275. Designation system allows you to check which metals were used in that alloy making. Most produce use 1 or 2 prefix letters, 2 or 3 numerals, and a suffix letter (for example, our wheel are produced from AZ91D alloy).


Main advantages of magnesium alloy are:

  • Quite low density (1, 74 g/cubic cm),
  • Good stability in air and other environments,
  • High activity as a reducing agent in chemical processes
  • Good ability to be alloyed with other metals.
  • To the special physical properties of magnesium alloys is their ability to effectively absorb elastic vibrations (damping capacity), which provides greater stability at impact and reduces the sensitivity to the occurrence of resonance phenomena.

One more benefit – a special structure of the metal makes it possible to experiment with its form and design without losing products strength and quality, an amazing opportunity for engineers, isn’t it?
